We’re dedicated helping kids live a health and active life by removing obstacles that are keeping them from taking part in regular physical activity.
Change for Change believes that by raising awareness, educating youth on proper nutrition and providing safe, fun regular scheduled activities for youth between 5 and 11 years old, we can help kids fight against this trend.
What We Do
We help support youth participation in educational, nutrition programs, sports, and regular scheduled physical activities to help them stay fit and have fun.
We also raise funds through corporate sponsorship initiatives by asking local business to join in the fight against overweight and childhood obesity in the local Durham area.
Why We Care
In 2013, 42 million infants and young children were overweight or obese, worldwide and 70 million young children will be overweight or obese by 2025 if the trend continues(1). Canada like many nations is in the midst of an epidemic of overweight and obesity.
Since 1978 to 2004, the combined prevalence of overweight and obesity among those ages 2 to 17 years increased from 15% to 26%. Increases were the highest among youth, ages 12 to 17 years, with overweight and obesity more than doubling for this age group from 14% to 29%. According to a stats Canada survey done between 2012 and 2013 the percentage of 5 to 17 year olds who meet the recommendation of least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity everyday was a staggering 14%. This statistic could be one of the most important contributing factors for why 59% of Canadians are currently either overweight or obese.
